Antwerp Zoo

Right next to the Central station in the busy city of Antwerp is one of the oldest zoos in the world (1843). Hugh and I had actually stayed at a hotel across the street when we visited in June and did not know for days that it was there.

We ventured there today despite the chance of rain forecast. We have learned that if you let that stop you in Belgium you may never go outside! It rains frequently here and we are already in fall like weather. Back to the zoo, it is quite large and had all your typical zoo inhabitants: lions, giraffes, elephants, penguins, hippos, etc. Overall a very nice zoo and the part about it being in the city is what makes it really unique. There are people who have apartments that must be able to see the giraffes. A woman I work with told me that she used to live so close that she heard the lions from her garden!
