The Windmills of Holland

Living so close to Holland, we had to get a close up view of some windmills.  We found out that the best place to do that is Kinderdijk, a small village that has 19 windmills dating back to the 1500's.

First order of business was to rent bikes.  This was my first time riding with a child on the bike and they ran out of smaller bikes (aka pre-teen bikes!).   I could not touch the ground with my toes at all.  Every time we stopped I had to jump off the seat while balancing my 40+ pound passenger.  Luckily we did not wind up in the canal!

It was a beautiful ride filled with canals, bridges, and of course windmills.  Liam and Brenna loved it.  Liam was a very chatty passenger, belting out in song here and there and also insisting that there were crocodiles in the canals.  Brenna was singing a Dutch song about "Nederland" and we still have no idea where she learned it from (confirmed that it was not her Belgian daycare).  A woman actually started singing along with her at one point, so we know it is a real song!

One of the windmills is open to visitors and has memorabilia from the family that used to live there.  Admitting our prior windmill ignorance, we were surprised to learn that people lived and still live in windmills.  We biked past several that looked occupied.

Time to stop for a picnic.  Great family day.
