Talking about the weather is pretty universal, so when you are in a situation where there are some significant differences from your norm it can even become an obsession. Besides the famous Belgian rain, the one topic that we discuss almost daily is the difference in the amount of daylight. In the winter months, the sun does not come up until 8:45 and will be gone by 4:30. It can be a bit depressing which may explain all the beer in this country :). Luckily this suffering does not go without reward - in the summer it will be light past 10 p.m.! My mother is right now working on drapes to cover the sheer ones in the kids rooms to avoid bed time fights this summer. All winter we have had to fight with Liam to get up at 7:30 a.m. because he insists that it is still night time out.
Exhibit 1 - the average amount of daylight per day in Antwerp Versus New York. Double click to get a good look.
The scientific explanation is that this is all due to how close each country is to the North & South Poles. New York is at latitude 40 and Belgium at 51.
I would have just rambled on about this, Hugh creates graphs. One of the many reasons I love my husband.

Richard would have done a graph too. For our ante natal classes he presented a statistical analysis on the odds of having a boy or a girl - the other men did things like what is a forceps delivery and pain relief during labour! Maths geek!
ReplyDeleteChrissy - I know we will both appreciate our math geeks when the kids need help with their math homework! I am strictly a liberal arts kind of tutor.
